November 2005 is compelling.
November is a compelling month in terms of the culture on offer: several major exhibitions look at the life of former Pope John Paul II, the impressionist paintings of Manet and Zandomemeghi, the innovative creations of Burri. Privileged space will be given to Pasolini, with two exhibitions in town dedicated to the writer and director. Mention must also be given to the 100 Nativity Scenes exhibition, and shows displaying delightful embroidery work from Seville and the exceptional puppets of the Magic Theatre. On the pop music front, big international stars are not lacking - such as Michael Bolton, Michael Bublé and Incognito – but this month will be focused primarily on Italian music. Aside from Baglioni’s performance celebrating the thirty-year anniversary of FAI (the Italian version of the National Trust), Alex Britti, Jovanotti, Max Pezzali, Enzo Jannacci, Max Gazzè and Stadio will all perform live in Rome. Opera, ballet and classical music are also at the fore this month with the Teatro dell'Opera’s renditions of Gades’ Blood Wedding, Prokofiev’s Cinderella and Bellini’s The Sleepwalker, the opening of the International Organ Concert and Santa Cecilia Orchestra at the Auditorium series, and the spectacular Tango y Musical. Theatre will convey powerful emotions through the energy-laden performance of Enrico Brignano, the histrionic quality of Antonio Albanese, the stage presence of Rossella Falk, as well as the feistiness of Anna Marchesini, the interpretational talent of Tullio Solenghi, the irony of Pino Insegno and the artistic vein of Franca Valeri. As if this were not enough, there are also classical plays on this month, such as ‘Cat on a hot tin roof’ and experimental pièces being put on at the alternative Piccolo Eliseo venue. The incredibly varied and at times experimental performances that are part of the high-quality RomaEuropa Festival can still be seen this month. Visitors can also finally enjoy the recently reopened Ara Pacis monument in the centre of Rome, and characteristic towns and places around Rome by taking part in one of the delightful regional itineraries currently being promoted by the Lazio region. |

Info 06671070400 Until 9 Jan 2006: Wolfgang Laib Pyramids of pollen sequentially laid out on the pavement, houses made of rice, stairs and boats fashioned out of wax, stones made out of milk: these are just some of Wolfgang Laib’s creations. Tue-sat h9-19; sun h9-14. €1 Sala Santa Rita, via Montanara, 8 (zona piazza Campitelli). Info 0667105568 Until 13 Jan 2006: Magico Teatro. I fantocci di Maria Signorelli (Magic Theatre. Maria Signorelli's marionettes) Fifty paintings and marionettes are on show. The puppets are one of the most original insights into the figurative culture of the 20th century exhibited in the 1920s in Rome, Paris and Berlin. These are soft sculptures that are inspired by literature but that also have their own stories to tell. They are made out of fabric, threads, ribbons and various objects such as fragments of mirror, toothpicks and buttons. The marionettes are like real personalities who must be seen, actually touched, with one's own eyes. Mon-fri h10-18. Free entrance Museo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari, piazza G. Marconi, 8. Info 065926148 Until 15 Jan 2006: Siviglia Ago e Oro. Splendori e Arte del Ricamo (Seville Needle and Gold. The splendours and art of embroidery) An exhibition that brings together the human and divine and displays refined works that have been created especially for the Week of Seville. More than a hundred pieces made between the 16th century and the present day show visitors the medieval tradition of "needle painting" that is still alive and well in Seville today. The different sections of the exhibition tell the story of the needle-workers from Seville and show the techniques and materials used. The layout of the exhibition and various audiovisual projections show us the creative phases of this art and skill. Tue-sun h10-18. €8 GNAM, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, viale delle Belle Arti, 131. Info 06322981 Until 22 Jan 2006: Degas. La famiglia Bellelli (Degas. The Bellelli family) The most famous work from Degas' youth is exhibited for the first time at the Modern Art Gallery. The truly revolutionary aspect of the painting is the dysfunctional non-unity of the family, the psychological elements of the picture take centre-stage and the tension in the family is palpable. The virtuosity of the mirror is also remarkable. This painting contains all the power of the Impressionist movement, showing how it shook up the aesthetic canons from within, allowing a flood of emotion, until then censored, to enter the realm of art. Tue-sun h9-19,30 Museo di Roma in Trastevere, piazza Sant'Egidio, 1b. Info 065816563 Until 22 Jan 2006: Pasolini 30 anni dopo. Uno tra noi (Pasolini 30 years later. Miracolo a Roma. Angelo Pennoni sul set di Accattone (Miracle in Rome. Angelo Pennoni on the set of Accattone). Sixty photos taken on the set of the film Accattone are presented. They paint a picture of this mythical figure and render a portrait of the working-class suburbs depicted by Pasolini. La lunga strada di sabbia. Fotografie di Philippe Séclier (The long and sandy road. Photos by Philippe Séclier). "La lunga strada di sabbia" is a written reportage by Pasolini on the fashion of holidaying that describes a trip he once made from Versilia to Trieste.
